RELEASE – CIA Files on Reinhard Gehlen

Note: While these files have been declassified and available to the public for several years, I have not seen them assembled into any sort of easy to download files. These 2,000+ pages, split into seven volumes, comprise the declassified portions of the Central Intelligence Agency’s (CIA) file on General Reinhard Gehlen, the Nazi intelligence chief who served many masters, including the CIA.

GENERAL Reinhard Gehlen, perhaps one of the most important people in modern American history that few have ever heard of.  While his influence was covert, it was of no less force.  The Nazi intelligence chief who served many masters including Adolf Hitler, NATO, and the United States Government. His intelligence reports on the Soviet Union during the formative years of the Cold War were used to shape American foreign policy.

During World War II, Gehlen was made chief of Fremde Herre Ost (Foreign Armies East), Nazi Germany’s military intelligence unit on the Eastern Front. He was able to reach the rank of Major-General before being fired by Hitler in 1945 for his accurate, but pessimistic, reports on the Red Army. However, early on he had sensed that Germany might not win the war, and so he had all of his intelligence documents microfilmed, placed in steel drums, and buried in the Bavarian Alps. It would later be these files that would save him from imprisonment and the war crimes trials.

In 1945, Gehlen surrendered to The Army Counter Intelligence Corp (CIC), and upon interrogation, he offered up his files and network of spies to the United States in exchange for his freedom. The files were dug up, his men in the Allied POW camps were transferred, and he was flown to Fort Hunt in Virginia in secret. It was there that a deal was hammered out for Gehlen to return to Germany, re-establish his intelligence network, and serve the United States Government. Thus the Gehlen Organization was born.

The Gehlen Organization, or the “Org” as it was referred to, was then grafted on to the fledgling CIA at its creation in 1947, and it was often the only eyes and ears on the ground in many Soviet bloc countries after the war.  It was through the Gehlen Organization that many hundreds, and perhaps thousands, of SS, SD, and Gestapo men came to work for the United States Government. It was the intelligence reports from these Nazi men, that wound up comprising an estimated 70% of all U.S. intelligence on the Soviet Union during the early part of the Cold War.

In 1956, the Org was handed over to West Germany and Gehlen became the first President of the Federal Intelligence Service (BND). He held this post until 1968 before being forced out due to a combination of factors. At his retirement he received one of the highest civilian grade pensions from the West German Republic, and allegedly, a pension from the CIA…

History of Great American Fortunes Ebook

Current episodes of the History of Americas One Percent podcast have been reading from the 1936 edition of Gus Myers’ classic muck-raking, fact filled, historically significant tome, The History of Great American Fortunes.  As far as I know this version has not been available online for download.

I will not embed it here because of its massive size, but you can follow the link to download a copy in PDF format that is OCR searchable. Now you can keep up and read along with the podcast.

History of Great American Fortunes, 1936 edition (187mb)

HoGAF Book Review from 1910

In the latest episode (#16) of The History of America’s One Percent podcast, I quoted from a book review of Gus Myers’ History of Great American Fortunes that I had stumbled across in The American Historical Review, Vol. 15, No. 4 from July of 1910.  The review is, as expected, quite disparaging of Myers’ work, calling it “…gossipy,  abusive, one-sided, and discursive, and for purposes of sound scholarship the whole might easily be compressed into one-third its present bulk.”  Of course they have to call him mean and gossipy because name-calling is the last resort of somebody who cannot challenge the facts. It’s almost hilarious to see the reviewer bend over backwards in the very next sentence, to admit that Myers’ facts are indisputable, and his contributions to historical knowledge great…

Anyways read for yourself or check out Episode #16 of the podcast for a more extensive breakdown of the book review.

The History of the Hazard Circular

Slavery is likely to be abolished by the war power, and chattel slavery destroyed. This I and my European friends are in favor of, for slavery is but the owning of labor and carries with it the care of the laborer, while the European plan, led on by England, is capital control of labor by controlling wages. THIS CAN BE DONE BY CONTROLLING THE MONEY.
– Hazard Circular, 1862

While re-reading the Gustavus Myers book “The History of the Great American Fortunes”, I stumbled upon a little factoid, caught in the massive spiderweb of knowledge that is that three volume tome. Pulling upon that thread I was lucky enough to find at the end of it a book that I am reasonably certain has been long forgotten, and so I am currently reading it into an audiobook format for your listening pleasure. However, as is always the case, I have stumbled upon yet another interesting bit of information in this current book, and this would be the “Hazard Circular”. In the book it was simply referenced as a circular (or letter) from “the creditors” of the United States, circa 1862, to every bank in New York and New England. The contents of this circular are very provocative; they set out the fact that the banks use the control of the creation of money to enslave people through devaluing their wages. I was quite shocked by this brazen statement and so I set forth in search of its origins. Little information was readily available on the internet, so I turned to the old and mouldering books and periodicals of a century ago to disinter the true history of the “Hazard Circular”… Continue reading

Herbert Hoover: Capitalist or Socialist?

For no particular reason I decided to browse an old forum I used to visit named the Daily Paul, home of supporters of former U.S. Representative and Presidential hopeful Ron Paul, and what I would call a member of the Libertarian echo-chamber. At this point in time I am finding it healthy (and useful) to pull back from whatever perspective I am currently viewing the world through, and to take a look at things through a different lens. Seeing as how I am currently re-editing (and thus re-listening and reading) some of the works of Gustavus Myers, who writes, unabashedly, from the socialist/populist/progressive/etc. viewpoint, I figured why not take a glance from another end of the spectrum. A “how’s the stench in your neighborhood” type of thing if you will.

The topic I ran across first and which I wanted to address was this one: Some of our newer (and some of the older) Libertarian minded folks need to self-correct. Unfortunately, I couldn’t register to reply directly to the author, so it is doubtful he will ever see this but none the less, why have a blog if not to spew forth more information into the already over-crowded public space? (Sarcasm)

While I would like to address all of the points of the author in that thread, I don’t have the time. But one thing which I will address is this point in the authors list of history that is NOT TRUE: Herbert Hoover was a capitalist. Or, that is to say, that the author thinks that Herbert Hoover was NOT a capitalist. The real history, the author concludes supports that statement. Well then if he wasn’t a capitalist, what was he? A socialist? The answer is probably not as cut-and-dry as one usually is presented…

Apache Kid: Buried at Yale with Geronimo?

The Apache Kid

When penetrating the swirling mists of legend and conspiracy veiling the Yale University secret society known as “Skull and Bones”, one inevitably stumbles upon the strange case of Geronimo’s skull. While the jury is still out on whether Prescott Bush (future U.S. Senator and father of George H.W. Bush) was one of the bandits and just exactly where the cranial remains of that fierce Apache warrior rest, let me introduce another bone for us to pick…The Apache Kid.

Yale Secret Societies – Cyclopedia of Fraternities

Here is some light reading on the origins and rituals of the senior Secret Societies at Yale including Skull and Bones, Scroll and Key, and Wolf’s Head. The oldest of these fraternities (Skull and Bones) stretches all the way back to the 1830’s and has accounted among its membership some of the most prominent family names in America including Bush, Taft, Whitney, Stimson and Luce to name a few. Its place as a nexus of wealth and power in America should not be ignored.
